SB-401 Audio Problem

My 401's ALC drops below "0" and the Ip decreases with modulation.  Works fine on CW.  Unable to get any RF outrput on LSB/USB when "yelling" into the mic and mic gain full CW.   Mic is OK. Any ideas to get me started in the right direction.
