the internal nicad battery for this radio is always bad. good heavens, 
they're older than sin now. The wimpy power supply and or charger may 
not have enough hummph to charge and operate the battery at one time. 
If I recall, there's some switching done when the 12 volt power cord is 
plugged in. a simple voltage check at the input power jack and battery 
would be the first rule.

and...

when you're done, the gr-78 really blows above 15 kHz..
