The AR-3...

I am curious how the other members of this list look upon the AR-3?

IMHO, it is FAR better than any other receiver of its type (basic almost-
a-receiver) and price class as its competition.

For instance, both the S-38A, B, C and the National SW-54 were
AC/DC rigs with hot chassies, and no real BFO. The SW-54 didn't even
have a separate bandspread. Both of them used an oscillating IF stage
for their "BFO", whereas the AR-3 (and the AR-2 before it) had a real
BFO.

Due to the AC/DC construction of the SW-54 and S-38(*), there was no
way you could add a "Q" multiplier. The AR-3 was wired and ready for
one, and had a transformer operated power supply.

The ARC-3 had conventional, and more expensive, separate coils for
every band, so that the variable inductors could be peaked at the low
ends and trimmer caps at the high ends.

The other two competitors had one single large coil form for all bands,
and there were no adjustments for the low ends of bands.

Lastly, the AR-3 cost less than 1/2 the price for either of the others.
