Wagging DX-35 Meter

Hello All...
I'm looking for either a replacement meter for my DX-35, or expertise on
how to remedy the needle wagging like a happy puppydog's tail.
For example, when loading the final, dipping the plate from the pegged
position causes the meter needle to wildly bounce back and forth and
doesn't settle down fast enough to get a reading. Getting a grid current
reading is impossible.
It does appear to be a problem with the meter rather than the transmitter
as it does this "wagging thing" out of the circuit with a low voltage
applied via taking a resistance measurement with my VOM.
The original DX-35 meter is a black metal bodied Shurite style (see any
50's era ARRL handbook advertising pages), 0-3 ma, 500 ohms, with 0-150 on
the top scale and 0-6 on the bottom. It may be stamped with 484621,
although the part number in the manual is 407-33.
Thanks & 73,
Tony
