Don, I certainly hardily second your idea's.  A new CR-1 would be a 
cracker jack idea - nice and simple and there is a lot of interest in 
the old crystal receivers.  It would sure be nice to get one with a nice 
silk-screened front panel, etc.  Been a lot of information out there on 
exactly how to come up with the coil, etc.  I think there would have to 
be some care taken to clearly differentiate the 'new' unit from the 
older one to avoid scamming.

One nice kit would be a programmable digital RF to demodulated 'thingie' 
which, along with proper code could be a way to experiment with, for 
example, panadaptors, etc. Various USB devices such as power meters 
would be neat.  But all should be relatively inexpensive so we can 
indulge in one - say $50 to $150.
