TX-1 VFO Drift Problem-Ideas, Anyone?

The Apache VFO tube normally has the heater
("filament") turned on whenever the transmitter is
plugged into the 120 VAC. This was not a modification
by a previous owner. The caution about the 6AH6 was
to protect the small filament transformer that is used
to supply the voltage for just the VFO tube. However,
later versions of the Apache came with the 6AH6 and
there were not any problems with the transformer.

Are you removing the AC from the transmitter (like
having a "master" switch) instead of just turning off
the switch on the front panel? If so, you ARE going
to have problems.

There was a modification that was in QST not too long
after the Apache first came out. That involved
changing the support of the top of the VFO can from
just a stip of metal to something more substantial.

The original owner of this unit was appearantly so
plagued by this he wired up the filament of the 6AU6
VFO tube to be constantly "on". Now, that _does_ cut
down on the problem a bit, but it's not a fix.
