It would seem, as a long held assumption of mine that the goal is to
have a gas-tight connection to reduce or prevent corrosion. Copper and
aluminum as metallic partners do not fare well as any person who owned
an aluminum boat and used copper rivets for repairs can attest to, so
any solder terminals should always be of the plated variety. Though
radio gear is usually not deployed in a marine environment as the name
"boat anchor" may imply, exposing equipment to normal atmospheric
dampness is enough, over time, to promote reactions between different
metals that ultimately result in the production of salts that interfere
with conduction. I have sometimes used noble metal plated washers or
compounds similar to anti-seize (sozitdon't as opposed to sozitdoes)
products that come with a variety of powered-metal additives like
aluminum or copper that enhance conduction and reduce the possibility
of corrosion. Be careful, as these compounds can dry out over time.
Clean area of contact, and good hardware that is good and tight. The
acidic content of the oil in your hands is enough to promote corrosion.
