Cable lacing is sometimes referred to as:  "a lost art"   BUT it is alive a well.

Cable lacing kits and supplies are still sold -- as well as waxed and non-waxed lacing cable.  A quick GOOGEL search provides a number of web sites.

The 1969 and 1973 ARRL Handbooks have diagrams for proper cable lacing.
