Ferrite Slugs

Well, it just so happens I was just looking into that. I have not done
all my homework (principally wrt where to get small quantities or the
exact parts needed) but Micrometals, Inc. <http://www.micrometals.com/>
does have threaded core's that will do the job. Look in their <Parts
Listing> section under RF Products --> Threaded Cores. In order to
decide what we need we need to know (for each particular application)
- the thread size and core length
- either the material type (e.g. Carbonyl C) or
- (to allow reverse engineering it) the application frequency

It is possible that some of the old-timers from Heathkit could dig
around for the original spec sheets and obtain this information.

If we could come up with a list of common cores, we might be able to buy
a quantity of them and split them up into smaller parts sets for us to
have.

But maybe someone has already done all of this and has the information
and parts available. It would be nice to have some spare core's around
to replace broken ones.
