Masonite?

Right. Bakelite was the first real plastic.
Those of us who want bakelite use black lexan or something like it,
instead.
Masonite is still being manufactured, but ever bit of it I have ever seen
is brown, and is MUCH softer and less sturdy than Bakelite. Also, most
of it I have seen is only about 1/4" thick.
One trade name for a Masonite variant is Abatibi, available at many
places like Home Depot or building supply stores.
