HW 16 Audio

I had an HW-16 in 1970, as my novice rig. Compared to my Johnson Adventurer
and Hammerlund HQ-100, having side-tone, automatic change-over, and a pretty
selective receiver was wonderful. However, on 15 meters it had a very low
audio, such that I had to use earphones. I took it to Heath (at that time
they had a store on Ventura Blvd., in Encino, CA . . I think) and they
tested it and could not figure it out, I think they even sent it to MI.
What I ended up doing was to put two phono jacks on the back panel, cut the
internal coax going from the antenna jack to the receiver antenna input, and
soldered each end to one of th jacks, an input and output allowing me to
insert a preselector into the receive antenna connection (I couldn't afford
one that changed-over, like the Ameco PT-X). This solved the problem, and I
made lots of contacts in those early 1970s, just to the left of the sunspot
maximum.

About two years ago, I bought another HW-13 - I cannot even remember what
happened to my original rig. To my surprise, 15 meters worked great -
plenty of audio, as did the other bands. Go figure. There may have been
something in the path between the antenna and the first stage of the
receiver that attenuated the signal. I'm assuming that you have tried the
HW-16 on all three bands, but maybe the problem is not really in the audio
at all, but just not even signal to drive the audio. Just a thought. Tom
