HW-101

I think I would leave the boards in and try a Q-tip with some rubbing
alcohol on it to see if the residue will come off easily. You could also try
a can of "duster" - Radio Shack sells them I think - that basically gives
you a blast of compressed air from a spray can. If there's a lot of dust,
run a dust buster along with it (carefully!) to pick up the airborne crud. I
don't know if the 101 had boards that snapped in with friction-mated
connectors. If you have any troubles, only then would I try removing the
boards and re-seating them to create a wiping action on the connectors and
clean off any oxide that may have built up. But I'd sure try not to do that
at first.

You may want to see if there are any paper caps in there - they might need
replacing (most likely in the audio stages). And I'd check the electrolytics
to make sure they aren't leaking and that they act like capacitors, using an
ohmmeter. Some would say to replace them no matter what, but I think they
are probably OK after only 16 years. (Didn't know you could still buy one of
those in 1990?!?)

Pull out the tubes, check them, and make sure the tube sockets are clean.
Use a tiny wire brush if not. Even the Q-tip trick might work here, but be
sure not to leave any cotton in the tube socket pins!

See my article on DX-100 restoration in January, 2004 QST. Many of the
techniques would apply here too.

FYI, I bought an SB-102 off E-Bay and after a quick once-over, fired it up
without using a Variac or doing any other cleaning, and it came right up. So
do what you can, but eventually, just turn the thing on and see what
happens!

GL! I bet it fires right up. Let us know.

Brian, W0DZ

Subject: [HEATH-TEMPE] HW-101

Hi:
Before Christmas I was given HW-101 from a mother of a young ham, whom
after he got through with college, decided he had no room for Amateur Radio.
Well she, being a thoughtful mom, put the radio away, under a sheet for 16
years!!!!
I want to restore this radio. The case is immacculate. The boards are
coated with dirt and dust. I
did lightly vacuum it but it seems to have something on the boards. Is there
anything that someone can suggest to use to clean the boards ? And also,
should I take the boards out or do them where they are ? Thanks.
