You change pitch by changing the gears, no rubber tires. Later homebrew
versions of the coil winder use "O" rings for the "rubber tire" as you
describe and no longer require gear changes. They both require changing
the follower cam to lay the wire down differently. If you want to see
some details on one please check out http://www.qsl.net/k5bcq/  and go
the coil winder section. They are not that difficult to make.

How does the right angle gearing on the  Morris "Improved" Coil Winding 
Machine work? In pictures I have seen I don't see how the gears would
mesh 
right and I don't see how you change the pitch etc. Are there supposed to
be 
rubber tires on the gears so it works as a friction drive?
