I have just the opposite happen to me!

The mirror site is still generally faster.  Also, I
often have problems even getting into the main site.

Now I have been using Comcast Cable Internet and, for
the past several weeks, have been using AT&T fiber
Internet (am dropping Comcast on 6 June 2006).  AT&T
has fiber all the way to the side of my house! 
Comcast is still coaxial cable and that is about 25
years old!
