Can anyone tell me how to make the standby position on the function switch
on my 301 actually put the receiver in standby? Seems kind of silly to not
be able to put the thing in standby when there is a position for it. :)
Also having what appears to be a VOX issue. When I put the mode switch in
CW, the 401 either closes one of the relays solidly or cycles the relay
quickly with no input from a key. No RF is put out, just a relay closing and
a sidetone. I have turned the VOX gain all the way down and the Anti-VOX all
the way up and no change.
The 401 is slaved to the 301 as a transceiver. If I turn up the volume on
the 301 to wide open, this anomaly doesn't occur. Anyone have any clues?
Now for a contribution....:)
I had intermittent drifting and audio troubles in my 301. The problem could
be duplicated by pressing lightly almost anywhere on the circuit board
behind the LMO. I suspected corrosion(aluminum and copper ground interface),
so I loosened all the screws holding down the boards and used a Q-tip to
apply Deoxit between the boards and the chassis. I rubbed it vigorously and
got much black gunk on the 6 or so Q-tips I used. Problem solved. Now my 301
is very stable and should stay that way for a long time. I also did the RCA
connector on the back of the LMO, the wafer switches and all the tube pins
as insurance.
A good applicator for Deoxit can be made from a horse syringe. Go to a feed
store and purchase a 10cc syringe and a BIG needle for under $2. Works like
a charm. I left the needle end as-is....the taper helps put the solution
exactly where I want it...especially on wafer switch contacts. Just put the
needle cover back on it and store it vertically. One thing...fill the
syringe good as the Deoxit will kill the rubber in the syringe and refitting
the plunger into the body is next to impossible.
Hope this helps someone out.
