BTW, if that fridge in the basement were on a dedicated circuit (which it
apparently isn't -- "dedicated" meaning with no other outlets, equipment or
lights on the same breaker or fuse, and only a single receptacle for the
refrigerator instead of the common duplex receptacle style) the National
Electrical Code allows it to NOT have a GFCI, even though all receptacles in
basements normally require them, for exactly this reason.  You don't want a
"nuisance" GFCI trip, which may easily go undetected, to cause your food to
spoil.
