SB-401 ALC problem

Hello to all. I am the proud new Heathkit SB line owner with some SB-401
problems. I have had a major "SB Jones" for a long time and finally did it.
In setting up the twins and aligning, I have run across a couple of issues
with the 401. The 301 aligned perfectly and impresses me with it's
sensitivity. I did a 3 way head-to-head comparison against my Drake R4-B and
Swan 600-R/C and the SB-301 heard every weak signal that the other 2 did.
Now, if I can just get the 401 to operate properly.. :-)
1) I get a negative meter deflection on transmit when in the ALC
position. I am curious if someone else on the list has had a similar problem
and found the cause.
2) If I decided to not use the cables for XCV operation (station
layout), could the tone that is heard when in TRAN mode can be eliminated?
3) I get no drive from the amplified D-104 mic I am going to use with
it. It is a known functioning mic and I am guessing that this is related to
item 1.
Any help would be appreciated. I am not much of an electronics tech, but I
can read a schematic and run a DVOM and soldering iron, so I am convinced
the 401 is fairly easily repaired.
Thanks in advance,
Warren Dean
