Another technique is to use the rounded "end nippers" instead of dikes...
pull the tail of the tie through them, back toward the handles, with the
head against the latch of the tie, then pull some tension on the tail while
cutting it off. The cut end retracts into the latch and NO damaging, sharp
end.
