Coax Switching

Well - it shouldn't be... look at this data

http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

The 830 is IMHO a far better receiver then the 430 then these test reveal
and one of my favorites (I have an 830 coupled with an R820 in my
collection) - BUT the 820/830 are known for RX sensitivity problems
developing when used in a high RF environment - like Field Day. I think it
was in the attenuator circuit if I recall correctly.

So - IF you have the 830 and the 430 hooked up to the switch - then it is
quite possible you could have damaged it. (That is why they are usually
called an ANTENNA switch.) I don't know the design of the switch or the
isolation between ports, but if it doesn't short the unused ports to ground,
then I think it is HIGHLY likely. Whether the unused radio is on or off
probably has no bearing on the issue.

Good luck

Subject: [HEATH-TEMPE] Coax Switching

Hi guys...
I have a Heathkit Coax switch that I built decades ago, and now that I have
two rigs, I have the output of both of these rigs into the switch, with the
common port the output to the tuner/antenna. Question: Is there a
possibility or potential or likelyhood that by transmitting on one radio,
that I can damage the receive on the other radio when it is turned off?
Would I decrease the likelyhood of damage if I turn on the RF attenuator on
the unused rig before I turn it off? I realize the safest way is to
disconnect the coax and terminate it into a 50 ohm load...but don't want to
do that. Simply want to switch between rigs.

I don't know if I was just used to the dimished receive capability ion my
Kenwood TS830S and didn't realize it until I compared it to the Kenwood
TS-430S, which is super hot!

Just wondering what your opinions are...any and all...but rest assured, I'm
not trading my Kenwoods for a /\/\.
