Well, not quite: there is a way to paint aluminum reliably, but it is a bit 
messy.

Wash the piece in question, first with a good soap to get all the grease 
off it, then wash it with vinegar, preferably that white distilled type.

Thoroughly rinse the vinegar off, dry with a lint free cloth or paper 
towels, and IMMEDIATELY paint the piece with a good enamel or 
laquer.

Properly done, the vinegar will darken the aluminum as it removes the 
oxide coating long enough for the paint to stick.

I have used this method for years and it works quite well.

However, zinc chromate primer IS the best way to do it. Besides, it is a 
nice greenish-yellow color.
