Another suggestion is to find a Marauder cabinet. The Heathkit Marauder
HX-10 cabinet has more cooling holes than the original Apache; top
and rear.
Although the Marauder HX-10 does not run as warm as the Apache, the extra
ventilating holes in a Marauder cabinet may provide the needed venting of
the heat generated by the Apache.
The original Apache and Marauder fans are junk. Others may think differently
but to me they are junk.
A good replacement for the original Apache cooling fan is a larger 120VAC
muffin fan. A new top will have to be made, I made mine out of perforated
aluminum obtained at Home Depot. Cut a piece to same size as original top,
mounted it on top of the final cage, and mounted the fan on the new top.
The Marauder has a 2 prong socket to power the fan. The Apache will
require the fan be hardwired but that's no bid deal.
The larger muffin fan covers 95% of the final cage's top, providing
a lot more air flow down into the final cage than the original fan
every could. There is approximately 1/4 to 1/2" of clearance between
the top of the fan and top lip of the cabinet. I suspect this clearance
will be the same with the Apache.
