Just a (final) follow up: The Chamberlain Group, the manufacturers of Sears
(and other) garage door openers, suggested their CLSS1 Garage Door Opener
Surge Suppressor as a means of protecting the logic boards. I have never
heard of this device as it's never advertised w/door openers.

Initially, I checked their website and found no mention of a
surge-suppressor made especially for garage door openers; I had to go to
their Customer Service site.

In addition to the usual AC protection, the CLSS1 also incorporates
additional surge-protection circuits for the external wiring; the (required)
safety-sensor wires and wall control wires.
