[Boatanchors] Heathkit question

So in my case, I have the 303/401 combination with the crystal pack installed in the 401. If I leave the crystal pack in, connect them for transceive operation and make the modifications to the 303 and 401 that Heathkit gave for transceive operation, then I can switch between stand alone and transceive simply by changing the position of the lock/unlock switch on the 401?? Am I understanding correctly?

If you have the crystal pack installed in the SB-401
then going to the "unlock" position completely
separates the units. You can operate the transmitter
on one band and the receiver on another.

If you do not have the crystal pack installed in the
SB-401 then you can only transmit on the band to which
the receiver is tuned and the switch must be in the
  "locked" position.

The same is true when using the SB-400 or SB-401 with
  the SB-300, SB-301, or SB-303.

do you have to choose beforehand whether you will
operate transceive or stand alone and the cable
appropriately and either put in or leave out the
  crystal pack?
