> Since using tube transmitter are new to me, I am a bit unsure about using
them with antenna's. I currently use a fan dipole and an antenna tuner with
my solid state transceiver. Can I use this setup with the cheyenne? The
manual states it has a pi network antenna coupler, does this mean I do not
need the tuner?
--"fan dipole" suggests to me that you have antenna elements cut for
each band you wish to use
--tube finals are harder to hurt than solid-state
--a pi-network can match a broad range (not as broad as what a tuner can
match, but a lot broader than what the output of your solid-state rig can
match).
So you probably don't need a tuner. Try it. Watch the finals (can you see
them through ventilation holes in the case?) and back off if they get bright
red. (Dull red at full output is okay if it's not constant.)
(In the heyday of tube rigs, tuners were uncommon and SWR meters were
virtually unknown, but the rigs survived.)
