6146W question

Sometimes the 6146W with code date of mid 1965 or
later (which are 6146B equivalents) will work in the
SB / HW equipment but most of the time they will "take
off".

A simpler solution that can be done in the Heath
equipment is to slightly modify the heater
("filament") connections to the 6146 tubes. The
filaments are basically in series to operate from 12
volts. If you change them from series to parallel
this will put 12 volts on the circuit. Then you can
use the 12 volt equivalent of the 6146 which is the
6883 or the equivalent of the 6146A/8298 which is the
6883A/8032. Those tubes are even more prevalent than
the 6146 or 6146A/8298 because they were used in
literally hundreds of thousands of commercial two-way
FM equipment.

I have seen these 12 volt tubes extremely cheap at
hamfests, etc. Now you do NOT want the
6883B/8298A/8552 which is the same as the 6146B except
for heater voltage.

If you do make this conversion make sure and put a
label on the final amplifier cage so that you don't
forget and replace the tubes with the 6 volt versions!
Also, if you ever get rid of the unit this tells the
new owner what has been done.

The article on the 6146 family of tubes that was in
Electric Radio a while back can be found on my website

The link to the article is the 11th from the top and
is the first under the heading "Articles".

Is is practical to modify SB/HW's for these finals? If
so, what are the details?
