HW101 problem

You may be refering to the squeel/rumble in the speaker when the AF gain was advanced.   It was caoused by a dried out electrolytic in the AF amp section.

I seem to remember that there was a thread concerning feedback squeal on
receive on the HW101, and that it was easily cured by some kind of bias on
the final.  Does anyone have the information?
