The solid state VFO in my SB-104 is not very stable, I guess because  there 
is insufficient headroom between the 11V supply line and the 10V zener in  the 
VFO assembly. A better solution might be to reduce the 10V to the  oscillator, 
use a low drop out regulator or increase the 11V supply. I  think that there 
was a mod note published about this but I do not have a  copy.
 
I have developed a solid state VFO using the Heath VFO assembly and tuning  
capacitor which is much more stable but does not track the mechanical dial of  
the SB101/301/401 series very well so I use a frequency counter display  
instead.
