Hi Ken

The bad news is that the tagged washers are inside the VFO housing close to
the front wall. You will need to clean the old goo off before replacing it
with some sort of grease. Once the VFO assembly is removed, you can take off one
side panel to gain access to the interior but not the side holding the VFO
tuning capacitor. Modern general purpose thin oils are not suitable as they
are fairly volatile and also creep / migrate across the oiled component.

Someone else on the list may be able to advise on a suitable grease?

Suggest that you clean and regrease the main variable capacitor bearings and
earthing sliders - I have had some of those behave erratically because of
dried grease. Also check that the valve holder connections to the valve pins in
the rest of the SB101 are still sound. I have had some of these socket
connections get very sloppy over the years, particularly the AF output valve which
actually fell out when I turned the rig upside down. You can (carefully)
tighten them a little with a sharp pointed tool like a scriber, otherwise change
the valveholder.

I wonder how many of the modern black box rigs will still be going strong in
40 years?
