On the selenium rectifier - oh, yeah, replacing them should be (and is, in my opinion) a must. If they haven't failed now, they will soon.
If maintaining the 'correct' look is important, you can snuggle a silicon diode (i.e. 1N4007 or the like) into the old selenium rectifier package. I usually don't bother - just get it out of there.
The voltage drop with a modern silicon rectifier will be substantially less (multiples of a volt) so expect more dc. If that is a problem, you can use a series diode to jiggle things back in place.

Thanks to all the great info from all of you I have found a replacement for the 54-2 Transformer that will work.
Oh, also replaced that Selenium Rectifier. Had one of those short in another unit years ago!!
