S-Meters

Glen and others of the "S-Meter" saga:

When I got my novice licence in 54, the only thing I could afford for a
receiver was a surplus ARC-5. None of the ARC-5's had an S meter. We
learned the "RST" by LISTENING.

In those days the "T" was all over the place. Some signals sounded like
"Spark Gap". No tone at all. i.e. 59"1" to the "chirp" (597). AC hum was
a 595.

I get a kick at all those "contesters" who give any signal, on any band,
at any time, a 599+. REALLY?? Give me a brake.
