Boy!! You've got that right! 

For a while I was selling and shipping large boatanchors 
(R-390 size). In order to preclude damage, I built custom-
fitted crates out of 3/4" plywood, held together with deck 
screws and glue, lining them with at least 2" of form-fit 
hard-foam.

What a complete pain in the .....

Well, anyway, if you haven't done it, you have no idea of 
the effort...or cost in time and/or money....required.

However, by doing this, I never lost a single item due to 
shipping damage....
