With my equipment, I have always attempted to repair using as close to
original technology parts as I can get. When they are no longer available (as
in a 1940 RCA ac/dc HF receiver, I try to at least maintain original
appearance (bad multi section filter electrolytic, I opened, removed old guts,
replaced with modern caps inside the can, and sealed it).
What are the thoughts in this group???

Hi Larry
I think there is room for all sorts of approaches to collecting and these
are determined by each individual's preferences / requirements so there is
no right and wrong. If someone wants to keep units in their original state
then leave them alone other than cleaning and replacing faulty parts.
I am a retired RF designer and happen to like the external appearance of
the Heathkit SB-Line units so I try to maintain that look but where the unit
has a techincal problem or does not perform particularly well in today's
band conditions I will make some changes if they are possible. I also build
brand new units in that style to match what I already have - you can see
some examples in my shack in the Personal Interests section of my joint
website and individually in the technical web site.
