Thanks, Glen. Definitely one possibility although 2 knobs almost equals the 
value of the entire VF-1! No easy answers.

I make the replacement knobs.  They do not have a brass insert but are solid, 
not hollow, like the originals.  Also, they do have a metal reinforcement for 
the set screw.
