I have rebuilt an HW-101 such that the radio is rock-solid. The new owner
of the radio I did the work on is sending me my notes, so that I can
forward the information to you all.
In my rebuild, I found there was no need to change the diode or transistor
to get good performance from it. However, I do believe that replacing all
of the resistors to modern 1/2W 5% carbon film resistors will help you. I
recall also changing some of the capacitors to get the trimmer capacitors
into a better range for holding their setting, and a different temperature
compensation cap - once I get the paperwork, that can be verified.
Have a good freqency counter to help guide you.
Good luck!
