I think the best way is a 3D printer or stereolithography also known as
rapid prototyping.

I find it hard to believe that your molds only cost $3K each...I have a
flossing device--see Fancyfloss.com--I have about $60K in my molds--five
parts....

Gang,

several years ago, I wanted to make a batch of the green flip lever knob,
the one used to select filters on the HW101 and SB101.

I called around and without much success. Ten Tec makes a box for me for one
of my projects and I asked in passing if they could make this part. I sent
it to them.

"Sure! No problem."

We talked a bit and I asked about price. "About a quarter a copy--depending
on the bushing material used. Steel, brass, or aluminum.

Now, the kicker. I had to order 2500 min

I had to pay for two molds, at around $3k each.

Bottom line was simple. Yes, I could in fact have the part made. It would
have to sell for about $250 each. I didn't think there be that much
interest. Project dropped.

And....somewhere in the world are the molds that made those dials...(they
are manufacturable, as at least Heathkit made them....).....and if whoever
has them would make a small run of 500 or so, he'd have quite a
business...for what it's worth, there was a fellow in North Carolina who
started making them...I want to say about 15 years ago...I bought a couple,
but his quality was poor and they didn't work well....

Somewhere, in the world, is a lifetime supply of Heathkit SB series dials,
which are not manufacturable it seems as no one
ever has come up with a replacement. The original dials crack, sometimes so
badly the tracker won't move through the worm guides
anymore and the dial is useless. So there is a desperate need for these
dials and someone is hoarding them. Maybe they are waiting
for the price to skyrocket on them On Ebay, I see them going for $50 or
more! That is probably the most COVETED Heathkit part, and someone who
bought out the remaints way back when has them stashed. Wish they would
un-earth!
