Very small amounts of alcohol, methylated spirits or white spirit -  
definitely not cellulose thinners.
 
Brasso (very old UK brass and copper cleaner liquid) does a fair job if the 
 surface is very bad and also provides a polished finish.
 
Brasso also does a good job on my uPVC outside window sills which lose  
their gloss after a few years of weathering.
