[Heath] SB 610 and SB 401 questions

This question comes up once in a while. VE3LU is correct.
The only reason a crystal pack is needed, or useful, is if you’re not using an SB3XX receiver. With a Heath receiver, you can choose between split and transceiver by using the “Locked-Unlocked” switch. The function switch, part of the on-off switch, should always be on Transceive when using the Heath receiver, and Transmit only when using the crystal pack.
Take it from me; I’ve been using a SB401/303 combo without crystal pack since I built them in 1970, and still have them on the air regularly!

I don't think that's right...because I've run split....and I don't have the xtal pack....

Yes and no. You can use the SB 401 without the crystal pack if you operate with the SB 300, SB301 and SB303 receivers, with the pair in transceiver mode on the same frequency. If you ever want to operate in "split" mode, the SB 401 using its own LMO to control the transmit frequency, then you need the optional crystal pack.
And yes, if you use the SB 401 without a Heath receiver, the you also need the crystal pack.

I think you only need the xtal set for the 401 if you're NOT using it with a matching receiver...i.e. and SB-300,301 or 303...I think you can even use the 401 as a "separate" on a different frequency when using one of these receivers and it will still work...

Jim, forgive me if I’m being obvious but a “crystal pack” for an SB-401 can be obtained from any Heath transceiver. I’ve been buying up HW-101’s for parts, such as the crystal sets, as the crystals do at times fail and HW-101 parts rigs are fairly plentiful and cheap. Chuck Penson in his Heathkit book, estimates that Heath made nearly 30, 000 HW-101 kits! Also, all SB-400’s came with the full set of crystals so if you can find an SB-400 parts rig, your good to go.

I have a SB 610 that needs a new screen. Is there anyone that has one for sale or can describe how to refurbish the one I have?
Also I am looking for a xtal set for a SB 401
Thanks 73
