A silicon diode has a temperature coefficient of -2mV/C, and it works over
a wide temperature range. When I was in college, I designed a digital thermometer
that worked linearly from below freezing to 100 degrees F. This is a characteristic
of silicon semiconductor junctions, and the linearity is good enough for
any consumer applications. Anyone who designs semiconductors knows this
since often this coefficient has to be compensated for in IC design.
