The commit should have timed out the attempt to talk to a dead RE,
but a bug (PR 33960) prevents this. 33960 was fixed in 6.0 and later
releases, but not in anything earlier. Putting the fix in an earlier
release isn't a big effort, so just holler if you need/want it.
