I'd imagine this is possible by looking in the Juniper private MIBs.  The 
MIB-II ifDescr normally returns what you saw, just the name of the 
interface itself, i.e. so-1/0/0, GigabitEthernet2/0, etc...

In Cisco's MIBs, the equivalent to what you're looking for is in 
locIfDescr.
