Whilst on the subject, can you route between routing instances via some 
kind of virtual interface to which you can apply a filter?

i.e. could you have a "dirty" instance and a "clean" instance and apply 
a statefull firewall between them?

Obviously you'd need a AS PIC/Module for the Firewall.
