I had a bug in 8.5 (a long-term release). Once they finally fixed it,
they told me they just weren't going to put it in 8.5 and that I had to
upgrade to 9.x. What is the point of "long term support" if there
really isn't going to be any attempt to release additional updates?

I don't speak for anybody but myself - that's enough trouble.
