No, I couldn't see any pattern.

It's a trunk interface on the EX and on the MX its a vlan-vpls
encapsulated unit on an flexible-ethernet-services /
flexible-vlan-tagging ae interface.

A colleague could reproduce it by just using a tagged uplink on the EX
and a VPLS instance on the MX with the interface put into the
instance.
