We have a 4200 as an RP and it works just fine. If a 4200 will, a 4550 definitely will.
I think the second question goes back to 'a packet destined for the router itself will be considered an exception packet', therefore it will be answered by RE.

Subject: [j-nsp] PIM-SM on EX4550
Hello,
Does anybody know if EX4550 can handle PIM register messages and serve as
RP accordingly? If yes, is it done in hardware or in software?
I tried to find documents on the net with no success. If you have any
experience or documents published by Juniper I would be glad to have them.
Thank you in advance!
