It is really easy to install/run. We run a single cloud controller for all our clients on UniFi V3, current version works great.
Installed on Debian 7 without issues at all.
I wrote up a quick guide:

There is no hack it is fully documented by UniFi in the wiki, upgrading is a simple matter of apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, easier than Windows (and more reliable).
