Short of a software issue on either side of the link, might 
you have any reason to suspect that the remote router has 
physically moved farther into its network, despite the 
point-to-point address?

Still trying to work out why it'd go from working point-to-
point okay, to suddenly needing eBGP Multi-Hop, across a 
point-to-point link, with no changes on your side.
