Hey all,

I just got back to the states from St John last night. What an insane trip. With help from provider viNGN, St John was able to have a public wifi hotspot up and working 4 days after Irma. It would have been two days, but the backhaul from viNGN's beach manhole to their CLS (or FAP in their nomenclature) was aerial fiber which was damage and had to be restrung precariously on downed poles. The following day wifi was extended to the National Park Service building which was acting as the hub for all disaster relief agencies (FEMA, Red Cross, Coast Guard, USPHS), and the day after that was extended to some businesses (grocery store, pharmacy, western union) as well a hotel that was being used by media and some responders and a resort complex that is built like a storm proof fortress where many critical personal, displaced residents, and business owners were using as a base and shelter from Maria.

This wifi network was initially built using gear that was already on the island, borrowed and repurposed.. We just got the first shipment of new gear onto the island yesterday on a private gulfstream 200, but now have access to significant logistics support from DIRT including access to military and civilian helos
