*Network Engineer*
*PLEASE NOTE: *This is a full-time position. This job posting encompasses
job duties and qualifications for a Network Engineer at a level II, III, or
IV. We will only fill one opening for this position and will consider all
qualified applicants.
NCAR – Computational & Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) – Operations &
Services Division (OSD) – Networking and Telecommunications Section (NETS)
Relocation costs paid per UCAR’s relocation policy.
U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8
U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position. UCAR/NCAR will not

*WHO WE ARE: *
Networking is a critical component of world class scientific research,
including climate, atmospheric, and oceanographic sciences, across the
Research & Education community in the Colorado and Wyoming region. Our
team is soliciting applications from talented and motivated network
engineers to join the Network Engineering and Telecommunications Section
(NETS) team in beautiful Boulder, Colorado to help us provide state of the
art networking for NCAR, UCAR, the Front Range GigaPoP (FRGP) and Bi-State
Optical Network (BiSON). NETS is a highly effective, energetic, talented,
and committed team.
This position resides within the National Center for Atmospheric Research
(NCAR). NCAR is a nationally and internationally recognized leader
atmospheric and climate related research and has been in operation for over
60 years. NCAR is a federally funded research and development center
devoted to service, research and education in the atmospheric and related
sciences. NCAR's mission is to understand the behavior of the atmosphere
and related Earth and geospace systems; to support, enhance, and extend the
capabilities of the university community and the broader scientific
community, nationally and internationally; to foster the transfer of
knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth. The National

NCAR has provided computing resources and services to the atmospheric
science research community since its inception in 1960. NETS works within
the NCAR Computational Information Systems Lab. (CISL). CISL’s mission is
to support and advance the geosciences with world-class computing, data
management, cyberinfrastructure, and research in mathematics and
computational science.

*BASIC JOB FUNCTION:*
This position is involved in a wide range of network engineering
responsibilities including the designing, planning, procurement,
installation, configuration and programming, maintenance, troubleshooting,
and documentation of network and telecommunications services and
equipment. This position may perform as team member or project leader, may
consult internal and external network engineers, CISL operations, partner
institutions, and UCAR/NCAR programs and divisions who use the above
networks.
*DUTIES INCLUDE:*
- Participates as part of a team in installation, configuration,
integration, testing, optimization, troubleshooting, and documentation in
the following areas:
- Maintains advanced knowledge of state-of-the-art networking and
telecommunications technologies, costs, and user needs in order to
formulate plans, justifications, and specifications for future NETS
projects and for advising NETS management.
- Maintains an in-depth understanding of enterprise authentication
methods and protocols and provide assistance with integration of enterprise
authentication and network systems.
- High performance Ethernet switches and routers in enterprise,
datacenter, and service provider environments
- Controller-based wireless LAN systems
- Linux virtual server systems for network operations
- IP Telephony (IPT) systems
- Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical transport systems
- Dependent on education and experience, this position may lead
and/or direct a team in these areas.
- Develops and maintains scripts for network monitoring and statistics
systems written in Python or comparable programming languages.
- Develops and maintains high quality documentation on all aspects of
networking and telecommunications for the Section and other operations
staff. This includes databases, diagnostic, resource, and user
documentation.
- Renders service on a daily and 24 hour-on-call basis as a consultant
in solving network and data communications related problems.
*REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:*
*Education and Experience:*
- Level II: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Telecommunications or
Electrical Engineering, and at least two years of computer science
telecommunications or electrical engineering experience; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. Working knowledge and skills in
required areas.
- Level III: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications,
or Electrical Engineering, and at least four years of computer science,
telecommunications or electrical engineering experience; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform
the essential functions of the job may be considered. Advanced knowledge
and skills in required areas.
- Level IV: Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, and at
least six years of computer science or engineering experience including
experience in conceiving, planning and leading development projects; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience. Expert knowledge and
skills in required areas.
