Without return-path tracreoutes/mtrs it's hard to determine who might be
responsible, but the string "XXX.alter.XXX" to me indicates Verizon/MCI.

Re: mtr -r option: agreed.  One useful thing though: if you have a wide
terminal (I use 132x43), is that mtr honours COLUMNS, so you can do
something like this (sh/bash syntax):

alias mtr='COLUMNS=90 mtr --order=LSRNABW'

...as a way to inhibit the DNS names getting cropped.  You might find
the --order argument useful as well (I know I do).
