Actually, this could also happen by accident, too.
It is my understanding (as told to me by LinkedIn support) that when
you join LinkedIn, you give them permission to harvest your contacts
and send requests to every contact that is not currently a member of
LinkedIn as known by the email address for that person in your contact
list. (Did you bother to read your ToS?) I've gotten spammed recently
by dozens of friends and business colleagues who have installed the
LinkedIn app on their smartphone, only to have it harvest their
contacts and spam me. I had to contact LinkedIn support and give them
my list of 200+ email addresses and tell them never to contact me any
again -- it appears to be working. (Some days I was getting 20 to 30
LinkedIn requests in my Inbox!)
Personally, I believe that LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. are massive
invasions of privacy and I refuse to play that game. Unlike
99.999999975% of the population, I still believe that privacy matters.
I hope some day the rest of the world wises up and follows me. But,
I'm not holding my breath.
JK
P.S. Full disclosure: Actually, I have dummy, placeholder accounts
with LinkedIn, Facebook, and a few other social sites. These dummy
accounts are set to maximum personal privacy, were created using tor
on a separate computer login with no PII configured in that login,
using single-session throw-away email addresses, etc. The only reason
I created the accounts is to prevent someone else from creating a
bogus account in my name. No photo and no real PII (other than my
name) exist in these dummy accounts. Everything is marked private and
unshared and all notifications are disabled, which these sites make
very difficult to do, repeatedly warning you that you are defeating
the purpose of having the account. The only thing public is a profile
that states the sole reason for the existence of the account is to
protect myself from someone creating a bogus account in my name (plus
a small rant on privacy).
